Linode Nanode Cloud Computing Plan Review

If you’re in need of a hosting account that provides a large amount of flexibility, you may want to consider a Linode Nanode plan. A nanode is a combination of the word “nano” and the company name, Linode. Linode prides itself on being the largest independent open cloud provider, and they offer several different cloud hosting plans. Our Linode Nanode plan review looks at what these plans are, who they’re for, and what the basic option offers.

Linode Review

  • Linode Nanode storage can be used with many types of websites, including informational sites, WordPress blogs, and eCommerce sites.
  • Incredibly flexible – add as many Nanodes to your hosting as needed.
  • You only pay for what you actually need rather than pay for a lot of features you never use.

  • This is a higher level of hosting and does require an understanding of how Linode hosting works.
  • While a single Nanode of storage and resources is cheap, most projects need multiple Nanodes. This can quickly add up.
  • These advanced hosting plans are not right for most needs.

Linode Nanode Plan Review & Analysis

Learning what Linode’s plans are and how they work can be challenging if you’re not familiar with block storage. It can also be difficult to determine exactly what projects and needs Linode’s Nanode plan is designed for until you fully understand it. However, if you have very specific server needs for data storage and retrieval, this may be the right option for you.

Who This Hosting Plan is For

  • Projects that need specific hosting.
  • Any website or project that needs flexible storage.
  • People who have knowledge about how block storage works or are willing to learn.

Who This Hosting Plan is Not For

  • Basic computer users.
  • Any website that doesn’t require a large amount of resources or specialized settings.
  • Anyone with a fairly small web hosting budget.

Bottom Line

Overall, Linode’s Nanode plan is designed to allow you to build the right solution for your needs. A Nanode is a small amount of storage that can serve as a building block for a host server. You can add more Nanodes as you need the resources, making this a very flexible hosting option.

What Is Linode?

If you’re new to web hosting, you likely won’t come across Linode in your search. That’s because the plans they offer aren’t for newcomers. They’re not even right for many businesses. Most online shops don’t need more than what they would get with Hostwinds managed vps hosting or, at most, a dedicated server. What Linode offers is much more. They are a cloud and virtual computing company that provides infrastructure-as-a-service. The cloud hosting isn’t designed for basic website hosting, even if those sites are huge eCommerce platforms. Instead, it’s designed for a few very specific niches.

Do You Need a Linode Cloud Computing Host?

Linode’s cloud computing services are aimed at those who need a large amount of processing power and other resources. The most common use that many people will recognize is video conferencing and streaming. Streaming high resolution video, especially if there are multiple streams going at once, is very resource intensive. The servers that host video streams must have a large amount of memory and bandwidth. Otherwise, the streams will frequently freeze or have other issues. Even servers that only host a large number of pre-recorded videos strain other types of hosts.

Another use for Linode’s cloud hosting is bitcoin processing or mining. A bitcoin processing server uses special programs such as the BTCPay plugin for WordPress to mine this cryptocurrency. In order to do this, the processor is given an incredibly complex math problem to solve. These problems are simply too difficult to ever be solved by hand. In fact, even powerful processors will take quite some time to complete them. When the problem is solved, a bitcoin is created. The process of creating and using cryptocurrency can be confusing, but the bottom line is that bitcoin processing is a vital part of this industry. Without advanced computers performing these calculations, cryptocurrencies wouldn’t exist.

These are just a few cloud computing examples that Linode’s plans are ideal for. This hosting can be used for any project that is complicated and needs a large number of resources. Linode specializes in offering servers that provide the speed, power, and scalability these complicated projects must have.

Why Linode’s Plans Are Not for Newcomers

In addition to being more computing power than most websites need, there are a few other reasons why Linode’s plans aren’t ideal for newcomers. First, they don’t include any basic control panels or other controls. Everything has to be configured from the ground up. If you’re not familiar with how to do this, you’ll either have to hire someone who is or take the time to learn.   These servers only use Linux, so you also have to be very familiar with how to use this operating system. Understanding database management is also vital.

Another reason these plans are for experts is that you have to configure your own security on these servers. This means you have to understand how to install and effectively use firewalls, virus scanners, data encryption programs, and more. Otherwise, your data will be exposed to hackers and viruses.

Linode Nanode Plan Review

Linode defines “Nanode” as containing one GB of memory, one CPU core, one TB of bandwidth, and 25 GB of storage. It’s like a basic building block of all of their plans. One Nanode is $5 a month, which is very affordable. However, since you’re likely going to need more cloud computing power than that for your complex projects, you can add more Nanodes to your plan as needed.

When you add a second Nanode, the price increases to $10 a month, but you also double your memory, storage, and bandwidth. The next jump adds four Nanodes, but in return, you get four GB of memory, four TB of bandwidth, 80 GB of storage, and two CPU cores.  You can continue adding more and more until you reach the maximum plan. This plan includes 192 GB of memory, 32 CPU cores, 3840 GB of storage, and 20 TB of bandwidth. Of course, it’s also the most expensive option and is almost $1,000 a month.

Linode’s Competitors

While Linode is one company offering various types of cloud computing plans, it’s not the only one. Their main competitors are Digital Ocean and Upcloud. So how does Linode compare to them?

Digital Ocean is known for having weaker server security. However, they also make it very easy to expand and scale up their servers. If security is paramount to what you’re doing, you may want to go with Linode instead. If, on the other hand, you really need incredible flexibility, Digital Ocean could be a better option.

Upcloud focuses on speed. They’re faster than both Linode and Digital Ocean. They have newer hardware, which gives them this edge. They do tend to fall behind both of their competitors in other areas, however.

Linode may not be the fastest or have outstanding flexibility, but they’re not horrible in either area. In fact, they’re a great all-around choice. Digital Ocean and Upcloud both have weak areas, while Linode isn’t lacking in anything. Linode is strong in all areas instead of standing out in one while being behind in others.

Do You Need Cloud Computing Services?

Now that you understand a little more about what Linode is and what they offer, do you need it? If you simply want to have an online presence via a website, something such as HostGator snappy vps hosting is all you need. However, if you’re planning on something more complex, you may need the resources you can only get via a cloud computing host.
